Dear Oprah,
I was deeply saddened to receive a message from the National Restaurant Association through the Georgia Restaurant Association, regarding Suze Orman’s request that viewers boycott restaurants for one month.
Restaurants are the predominant small business in the United States. These small businesses may be the only ones who could regroup and weather the current economic crisis.
We are a Restaurant Broker in Atlanta Georgia, and work with many small businesses in the Atlanta Area. We hear so many stories about how restaurant owners are struggling. I talk with many restaurant owners each week. Every one of them tells me that they are receiving many applications from displaced workers. Especially from Real Estate and Mortgage Brokerage, as well as all of the banks that are cutting jobs at an alarming rate. The restaurant industry may be the last refuge for these people until the economy stabilizes.
This message from Suze on your show could have far reaching devastating consequences. Please think about what the National Restaurant Association has to say about the comments made by Suze. They include important statistics.
I have been in the restaurant business since I was 12 years old, and have a passion for the industry.
Many people are hanging on by a thread, and I would rather sell a restaurant because the owner wanted to sell, rather than being dealt this death blow, just when things are starting to turn for the better.
Please address this issue! Following is a link to the statistics regarding the havoc that this message from Suze could cause:
